Fund the NHS not fossil fuel companies – today we’re at Planet Festival in Huddersfield

This afternoon (Sat 5th September) we’re at Huddersfield Planet Festival in Greenhead Park. Please come by our stall and support our call to Fund the NHS not fossil fuels, and sign the Huddersfield Keep Our NHS Public petition to keep both Halifax and Huddersfield A&Es open.

Our NHS is being run down and sold for want of £22bn/year funding – but the UK government gives fossil fuel industries £26bn/year subsidies.

This is killing us. Around 180 people a year in Calderdale die from the effects of traffic air pollution. Eliminating the subsidies would cut deaths related to fossil fuel use by 50 per cent. It would also reduce carbon emissions by a fifth.

And the closure of A&Es is killing people. After the closure of Stafford Hospital A&E, everyone has been pushed to Stoke A&E. They’ve had huge waits in corridors and eight patients died after spending more than 12 hours stuck on trolleys in A&E last winter.

We cannot let this happen in Calderdale and Kirklees.

The plan is to run down both District General Hospitals by turning one into an acute and emergency hospital serving both areas, with an emergency centre replacing both A&Es. The other hospital will become an 87 bed planned care clinic with a minor injuries unit.

All this because politicians and NHS commissioners say there’s not enough money to keep both District General Hospitals in Huddersfield and Halifax – nor to fund GP services properly. GP funding per patient fell by 7% between 2008/9 and 2012/13 and has fallen further since then. And social care funding has been slashed.

So our hospitals are overloaded. And our Trust is in deficit and under special measures. Its future is uncertain.

We have to keep both A&Es open and restore the NHS to a properly funded, publicly owned and run health service. Please sign up to help us. And sign the Keep Our NHS petition.
